Commonwealth Forces in '44 - WW2044 Dev Diary
World War: 2044 - What if WWII happened in the 21st century?
The British Return to the Continent
In our WW2044 timeline, the British Commonwealth enters the European theatre following a hard-fought defensive campaign against the German Empire. With the home islands secured, British High Command commits to a modern-day D-Day operation - projecting force across the Channel with a blend of legacy doctrine and cutting-edge equipment.
The result is a force that feels both familiar and alien: infantry formations structured along classic WWII lines, but equipped with modular body armor, integrated communications, and night-fighting capabilities that redefine the tempo of amphibious warfare.
Retrofuturist Design - Dieselpunk meets Milsim?
The core design philosophy remains consistent with the broader WW2044 project - a “retrofuturist” reinterpretation of WWII aesthetics. British troops retain the silhouette and identity of their historical counterparts (brodie Helmet! TactiBrodie!), but their gear reflects a 21st-century battlefield:
- Reinforced webbing systems adapted into full tactical rigs
- Helmet-mounted optics and communications suites
- Hybridized weapons platforms combining classic profiles with modern attachments
This approach preserves visual continuity while grounding the setting in a believable near-future doctrine.
Storming the Beaches - Juno, Sword, Gold
British and Commonwealth forces take a central role in the landings, spearheading assaults on Juno, Sword, and Gold beaches. The crossing itself is far from straightforward - contested airspace, electronic warfare interference, and fortified coastal defenses turn the operation into a high-risk maneuver.
Specialized units - including Royal Rangers and assault engineers - are tasked with breaching obstacles and securing footholds under heavy fire. Verticality becomes a defining challenge, with troops forced to scale reinforced seawalls and urbanized coastal defenses in the opening hours of the invasion.
Garrysmod and Machinima content
My passion for 3D is well-known of course, so for WW2044 I want to bring more 3D-animation adjacent footage into the mix. While true 3D animation is well (well!) outside our budget, we are trying to find ways to mod game engines to do the work for us. Arma 3 players will be familiar with ZEUS, a game mode where a 'game master' can drop units on a map and have them duke it out. We have quite a bit of internal screen tests in the crew where we are trying to figure this out.
Until then, Vincent out!
