What if the most iconic German vehicle of the Second World War never went away? What if instead of retiring the halftrack, the German Empire's engineers just kept making it bigger, angrier, and considerably more difficult to destroy?
THE VEHICLE
Depicted here is a Sd.Kfz.341 IFV variant outside Vielsalm, Belgium, winter 2044. In the opening phases of Operation Herbstnebel, the 341 served as the backbone of German mechanised infantry formations pushing through the Ardennes. Such vehicles would attack in combined arms groups, using the dense forest terrain and frozen ground to mask their approach from Allied drone surveillance.
The 341 is my original WW2044 design, but functionally it fills the same role a modern IFV would: troop transport, fire support, and forward reconnaissance. Eight men, armoured flanks, a Puma IFV turret up top, and enough countermeasures to make a drone operator's afternoon very unpleasant. (The crew probably has opinions about this too, but nobody asked them.)
WHERE THE DESIGN CAME FROM
The original German halftrack has been on my mind ever since I did the Leichtpanzer 223. There is something about the halftrack configuration, front wheels for steering, rear tracks for traction, that reads as genuinely strange and interesting in a 21st century context. I widened the chassis, added weapon pods, enclosed the crew compartment fully, and bolted on a modern sensor suite. The Osprey book reference was invaluable for getting the original proportions right before I started breaking them.
The Puma IFV turret was a fan suggestion, and it was a good one. It sits naturally on the widened hull and immediately signals "this is a fighting vehicle" rather than just a transport.
THE AESTHETIC TARGET
I am shooting for what I call a Dieselpunk-adjacent but grounded hard sci-fi aesthetic. The community has responded well to this, and I think it's because the alternative, full Wolfenstein-style over-the-top dieselpunk, immediately reads as fantasy. WW2044 needs to feel like something that could actually happen. Not chrome and neon. Mud, canvas, welded steel plate, and off-the-shelf optics (lots of it outdated!).
The art style I am shooting for is somewhere between Wolfenstein and a modern Bundeswehr vehicle. Distinctly German, recognisably descended from WW2 hardware, but plausibly functional in a 2044 battlefield context.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THIS DESIGN
Fun fact: I first worked on Dieselpunk WWII vehicles as early as 2016, with a Maya modelling project called 'Bulle.' That project never went anywhere publicly (nine years of dust on that one), but the design thinking has been sitting in the back of my head ever since. The Sd.Kfz.341 is in many ways the proper realisation of ideas I was sketching nearly a decade ago.
