About vincent
I am Vincent De Nil (known under the deeply original nickname 'VincentDN'), a Belgian founder and art director working between Stockholm, Sweden and Raleigh, NC. I'm the founder of the Kaiser Cat Collective, the team of alt-history worldbuilders behind The Divided States, WW2044, American Kingdoms, and the long-running World of Kaiserreich documentary series.
My work sits where historically inspired design meets original worldbuilding: taking the great "What if?" questions of alternate history and giving them a believable visual identity.
From a Kaiserreich mod to an international collective
My path into alt-history began as a modder. After the viral success of my Kaiserreich mod-inspired art and animations, and after retiring from the Kaiserreich mod team, I founded the Kaiser Cat Collective in 2016 to create original, high-quality documentaries exploring the lore of the world's greatest alt-history IP.
What started as a one-man art project grew into a global coalition of artists, writers, actors, and musicians. Along the way, my alt-history propaganda poster series struck a chord worldwide, passing 10,000 sales and funding the Collective's expansion into original shows, comics, animatics, and even live-action short film.
What I do at KCC
I realize 'Art Director' may be a wooly term for most, so let me break it down real quick. As a general rule of thumb, I do a little bit of everything, but hand all of the important work off to people better than me 😅
Worldbuilding and creative direction
As art director, I set the visual and narrative direction for our original worlds. I shape the concept art, flags, and historical detail that make each timeline feel lived in, from the Second American Civil War of The Divided States to the medieval reimagining of the Revolutionary War in American Kingdoms.
Vexillography and historically inspired design
I'm a lifelong vexillography enthusiast, and I treat flag design as a worldbuilding tool: a way to give an invented nation an identity you can read at a glance. That same craft became the foundation of my second company, Flagmaker & Print.
Dev Diaries: The World of...
My preferred method of storytelling is the so-called 'World Of' project: A distinct series of concept art pieces and ideas, combined with a personal narrative played by a voice actor.
Aside from my story work, I document my process in the KCC Dev Diaries, first-person write-ups of concept art, design decisions, and behind-the-scenes development across our projects. They're the clearest window into how I build these worlds, one decision at a time.
Beyond the Kaiser Cat Collective
I'm also the founder of Flagmaker & Print, the custom flag design and printing service trusted by worldbuilders, sports teams, community organisations, schools, and flag hobbyists across the United States and beyond, a direct outgrowth of my vexillography work at the Collective.
I've spoken about this work at industry events, including a 2019 Paradoxcon panel in Berlin on creating the world of Kaiserreich.
